National Library Week is April 7 through 13! Established in 1958 by the American Library Association, American Book Publishers, and the Advertising Council, this week is for carving out time to reflect on the importance of reading and the institution which is your local library. In addition to picking up a book or two, why not celebrate National Library Week by checking out a “new to you” movie that celebrates the value of literature and libraries? I’ve listed some of my favorite recommendations below!

The Pagemaster (1994)- Starring Macaulay Culkin, Christopher Lloyd, Whoopie Goldberg, & Patrick Stewart

Let’s start things off with one of my favorite children’s movies. This animation/live action hybrid is a classic filled to the brim with amazing voice performances from its star-studded cast. Main character Richard’s journey from shy and timid to brave and confident is inspirational to all ages, and the fact that his growth is encouraged by three anthropomorphized library books is the perfect way to understand the importance of reading in a fun and colorful way.

The Public (2018)- Starring Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, Emilio Estevez, & More

Set in a Cincinnati library during a brutal winter storm, this movie examines the idea that libraries are more than just places to check out books. The stacked cast uses their talents to highlight the sense of community that can be built around and inside the library. A perfect watch for National Library Week.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)- Starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal & Emma Thompson

What would you do if you woke up one day and discovered your life was the plot of a best-seller, and that the story ended in your death? Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell, experiences exactly that. If that idea intrigues you, I highly recommend checking out this heart-felt comedic film with a unique premise that focuses on the impact of the stories we tell.

Dead Poets Society (1989)- Starring Robin Williams

Perhaps my favorite film on this list, Dead Poets Society is a classic for a reason. William’s masterful portrayal of English teacher John Keating, along with the performances by other cast members, will pull at your heart strings. It highlights the impact literature can make in our lives, an important tenet of libraries around the country.

Matilda (1996)- Starring Mara Wilson & Danny Devito

Here’s another classic film that will tug at your heart strings. This adaptation of literary icon Roald Dahl’s Matilda will have you laughing and warm your heart. Our main character Matilda copes with and ultimately overcomes the trials and tribulations of her downtrodden life by finding inspiration at her local library, something real-life patrons often find at their local libraries!

I hope these recommendations not only provide entertainment but also help foster a relationship between you and your local library in honor of National Library Week!
